Tank Driving in Afghanistan

As a member of the Royal Tank Regiment, I have been fortunate enough to enjoy some excellent Maisiers (mons) action in Afghanistan. Here's what it's all about:

Tank driving is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, but there are few jobs as dangerous as Tank Driving in Afghanistan. You will have to deal with a lot of dirt and mud - it's a bit like playing football in the mud, except that it's even worse! You're almost guaranteed to break a bone, or at the very least sustain a minor injury, while working on a military tank.

But in spite of the dangers, Tank Driving in Afghanistan is one of the most interesting and rewarding jobs available. One of the main reasons why I chose to spend two years in the Army was because of the experience of being a Tank Driver. It was such an incredibly exciting job and one which made such an impact on my life.

The Tank Driving training in the army is designed to give recruits the skills necessary to safely operate on the streets. They are taught how to drive the vehicle, how to manoeuvre it, and what to do when something goes wrong. This is what makes Tank Driving in Afghanistan so different to the standard training you would receive in the army - they take a slightly different approach than what you would normally find. You're taught how to make use of your mirrors to see things better, as well as being taught how to stop safely.

After Tank Driving, you can join the army as a driver or even join the Army Reserves as a Driver Mechanic. In these jobs you are usually expected to spend around seven days on the job, so you will be getting a lot of practical experience in addition to all the theoretical knowledge that you've gained by being a Tank Driver.

The job of a Tank Driver in Afghanistan is very much like that of a soldier in the war: fighting and winning wars. When I was deployed, I saw just how much fun it is to be in a real military tank, and how dangerous it is to be in one of them!

My first week in the military tank drivers' school, they put on a show about how to drive a tank. I remember the excitement and fear, but it was all worth it to me afterwards - not only did I know what it was like to drive a tank, but I also got to watch someone else do it.

I was lucky to be selected to be a member of the Tank Platoon of my regiment, but I wish I could have been a member of the crew of a real tank. As it is, I'm proud of the role I played on the Tank Platoon.
